Exhaust systems play two major roles in the function of your vehicle. First, of course, is to vent dangerous gasses, and fumes away from passengers in the cab. Second is to dampen the sound of the engine. If you’ve ever heard a car drive past with a hole in their muffler, or no muffler at all you can appreciate just how much the exhaust system does to mitigate noise.
Signs that your muffler may need servicing are usually sounds like increased loudness, possibly popping or backfires, or scrapping as the muffler may have broken off and dragging. You should also be on the lookout for rust, and signs that your exhaust system is hanging lower than normal due to broken hangers and connecting pieces. You might also notice excessive vibration, or shaking while your vehicle is idling. If you notice any abnormally loud sounds it’s important to get your muffler and exhaust system checked right away.
